Physical Activity in the Workplace
Regular physical activity plays a key role in preventing disease such as osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.  We also know that being physical active will not only improve your physical health but can also increase your energy level, reduce stress, improve your self-esteem, performance and concentration.

According to Health Canada, fifteen million Canadians spend one-half of their waking hours at work.  For this reason it is crucial for workplaces to find ways to promote physical activity during the workday.  There are many ways for workplaces to incorporate active living.  It can be simple, inexpensive and fun.

Why promote Active Living in the Workplace?

As many as 57% of Ontarians are insufficiently active for optimal health benefits.  (Canadian Community Health Survey, 2000/01)  Research suggest that there may be increased costs for organizations that have physically inactive employees.  Some of the costs include reduced productivity, increased levels of worker's compensation and increased employee benefit cost.  There is also a potential link between active living/fitness and individual employee well-being.

Workplaces that advocate regular physical activity will benefit from....

  • Improved employee health and fitness;
  • Improved productivity and morale;
  • Improved job satisfaction and team spirit;
  • Reduced absenteeism and turnover;
  • Reduced injuries.
How to get started

It is never to late to start an active living strategy in your workplace.  According to Canada's Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Living, the best way to be active is to choose everyday activities that you enjoy.  Here are a few examples of simple, organized activities that could be implemented in your workplace throughout the year.

  • Shifting Gears (Active Transportation Workplace Challenge)
  • Cross Canada Challenge (walking challenge)
  • Take a Stretch Break
  • Take the stairs campaign
  • Walking workshops
  • Active lunch break
Physical activity can be a great way for workplaces to provide a creative opportunity for both employers and employees to stay healthy and be happy.  Get your colleagues involved in active living and spread the word about the benefits of regular physical activity.  Choose an activity that everybody can enjoy and new relationships, as well as healthy habits, will emerge.
