It is important to acknowledge the special role that smoking can assume in the lives of those who smoke, and the serious difficulties that many (but not all) encounter when attempting to change this highly addictive behaviour.
Quitting smoking to some can be like losing a best friend. Become familiar with the many resources and tools in your community that can assist your patients to be successful in quitting.
Just as health care professionals who have never been mothers themselves can successfully support new moms learning how to breastfeed their babies, non-smokers can show empathy and lend meaningful support to all smokers, especially those wanting to quit.
