Baby Gift Ideas

Birth to 8 months:

Your baby’s senses are developing.
Control over movement begins, initially with head and arms.  Reach and grasp begins. Choose toys that stimulate different senses, and those baby can reach for and hold.  Examples include:

  • black and white mobile

  • baby-safe mirror

  • latex/pvc-free teethers

  • light rattle

  • “baby gym” for early reaching

  • roly-poly toys (wobble toys) for when baby is on tummy

  • toys with different textures and contrasting colours

9 to 14 months:

Your baby’s thinking and hand skills are developing more now, allowing for turning pages of a book, scribbling, banging and stacking blocks.  She is moving more, so balls, banging toys, and cause & effect toys become fun.  Look for:

  • board books (especially featuring photos of people and animals)

  • balls/blocks

  • nesting cups/stacking toys

  • containers for filling/dumping

  • pounding toys

  • floating bath toys

  • toy musical instruments

15-24 months:

Moving upright enables your baby to move with toys, such as toy cars, ride-ons, push toys, and balls.  Thinking and hand skills continue to direct play, and your baby can now manipulate more complex things, such as closures.  Pretend play begins and imitating adults is lots of fun!  Add to the toys from the earlier lists with the following toys for this age:

  • chunky markers and paper

  • dolls/animals

  • cars/trucks

  • ride-on toys/push and pull toys

  • puzzles

  • large stringing beads

  • pop-up toys
