Abuse Prevention

Elder Abuse is defined as any action or inaction, by a person in a position of trust, that results in (potential) harm to an older adult. 
It can include:

  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Psychological/emotional (including spiritual)
  • Financial
  • Neglect
  • Denial of civil rights

Facts

  • Estimated population of adults over 55 years in year 2000 = 36,079
  • Canada wide research completed in the late 1990's indicate 4% of older adults experience or have experienced at least one form of abuse.
  • This means there are potentially 1443 older persons in Peterborough County and City living in abusive situations
