Prenatal and Preconception
If you are pregnant, or planning a pregnancy, it is helpful to talk to a Genetic Counsellor if you have:
- a disease, birth defect, or condition that is known to be passed down through families (inherited);
- a personal or family history of infertility, miscarriages or stillbirths, or mental or physical disability;
- used, or considered using, reproductive technology like in vitro fertilization;
- been exposed to alcohol, drugs, or toxic substances during your pregnancy; or
- had a prenatal screening test or an ultrasound where the result showed that the baby could have a problem.
| Pregnant women, 35 years of age or older, may wish to speak with a Genetic Counsellor about having amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. These tests look at the baby's chromosomes (their genetic blueprint for normal growth and development). |
