The Health Unit only offers Preventive Service Clinics at no cost to children who have no dental insurance and have no financial means to obtain preventive dental services. (See the Financial Assistance section found on the Dental Home Page). The clinics are offered by appointment only at the Health Unit, 10 Hospital Drive, Peterborough.
Preventive Service Clinics are conducted by a registered dental hygienist and dental assistant. Each child receives oral hygiene instruction followed by a self-brushing session. Cleaning, polishing and/or sealing, and a 4-minute topical fluoride treatment.
Eligible children may also receive pit and fissure sealants free of charge at the Health Unit. Sealants are plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Liquid plastic is drizzled into the deep grooves of the teeth and then hardened using a special light. Sealants are only applied on permanent first and second molars which have deep grooves. They are applied in a few minutes without "freezing" and protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth from decaying.
If you have any questions, call the Dental Program at the Health Unit at (705) 743-1000 TTY: (705) 743-4700.
