Healthy Smiles Ontario Program – Basic Dental Care for Children and Youth

Healthy Smiles Ontario is a new, dental program for children 17 and under who do not have access to any dental coverage and who meet the program’s eligibility requirements. Eligible children will receive preventive and early treatment dental services at no cost to them.

What does Healthy Smiles Ontario Cover?
Healthy Smiles Ontario covers regular visits to a licensed dental care provider, such as a dentist or dental hygienist, to establish and maintain good oral health. It covers a full range of dental services including check-ups, cleaning, fillings, x-rays, scaling and more.  So individuals who already have a dentist will be able to continue to see their dentist, providing he or she is participating in the program

What is not covered?

Healthy Smiles Ontario does not cover cosmetic dentistry (such as teeth whitening), orthodontics (such as braces) or urgent/emergency dental services.  Financial assistance for urgent or emergency care for children and youth, 17 years of age and under, may be available through the Children In Need of Treatment (CINOT) program.  Please contact your local public health unit or go to ontario.ca/cinot to find out more about CINOT.

Eligibility

Children and youth 17 years of age and under may be eligible for dental care under Healthy Smiles Ontario if they:

  • are residents of Ontario;
  • are members of a household with an Adjusted Family Net Income of $20,000 per year or below; and,
  • They do not have any form of dental coverage (including other government-funded programs, like Ontario Works).
