Distracted Driving - Legislation and Fines

As of February 1st, 2010 it is illegal for drivers to use any hand-held communications or entertainment devices while driving.  This includes the following:

  1. Cell phones
  2. MP3  players
  3. Hand- held GPS systems
  4. Laptops
  5. DVD players

If you are caught using any of these devices while driving you will be fined as follows:

Offence

Retribution

Driving with cell phone

$155 ticket
Up to $500 charge at judge’s discretion.

Careless driving with cell phone

Additional $1000 + 6 demerit points
Suspension of drivers license
Possible 6 month jail term

Dangerous driving with cell phone

Additional $2000
5 year jail term



Other Distractions

Hand held electronic devices are not the only driver distractions.  Other distractions include hands-free cell phones, eating and drinking, and applying makeup. When driving focus on the task at hand and make the roads a safer place.
