Breastfeeding - Your Rights as a Breastfeeding Woman

Did you know that you have the right to continue breastfeeding when you return to work?

"Breastfeeding includes pumping or expressing milk, as well as nursing directly from the breast."

The Ontario Human Rights Code states that:

• you have the right to have your employer consider your needs as a breastfeeding mother;

• employers must take steps to meet your needs as a breastfeeding mother unless these needs are extremely costly or present health and safety dangers;

• you should talk with your employer about your wish to breastfeed before you return to your workplace; and

• if you encounter difficulties with your employer, you can contact the Ontario Human Rights Commission at 1-800-387-9080 or visit their website at www.ohrc.on.ca.
